MC Choctaws 2009 Season Football Tickets on Sale

Are you ready for some football?

Evidently that's the case for thousands of fans of the Mississippi College Choctaws. Tickets are on sale as we speak at MC athletic department offices.

MC opens the season Sept. 5 with its classic Backyard Brawl versus rival Millsaps College at Robinson-Hale Stadium. Tickets sell for $15 at the gate and $10 in the weeks leading up to the contest. Kickoff on the Clinton campus is at 7 p.m.

MC head football coach Norman Joseph would love to see faculty, staff, students and other fans of the Choctaws show up in droves at the season opener. Cheering on the home team never hurts when the Choctaws take the field in Clinton.

"It's important for us to come out of the blocks and play in a successful way against our cross-town rival," Joseph said. "We need a nice crowd."

Steve Stanford, the vice president for administration and government relations, will be among those in the stands rooting for a Choctaws victory.

"There are bragging rights involved and the fun and enthusiasm with a cross-town rivalry," Stanford said.

Before the big game, student body presidents exchange tokens from each school, a tomahawk for MC and a saber for Millsaps. And to the winning school in metro Jackson goes a nice trophy.

MC fans haven't forgotten last year's game. Millsaps whipped the Choctaws 42 to 6 on the Jackson campus. In 2007, MC won with a miracle finish by a tally of 27-26.

Faculty and staff will have to shell out money to attend the 2009 version of the Backyard Brawl. During other home games during the upcoming pigskin season, they will be admitted free with an MC ID card.

With the return of MC senior quarterback Adam Shaffer, a former Jackson Academy standout, the Choctaws are expected to be among the premier teams in the American Southwest Conference.

Here is the rest of the Choctaws' home schedule:

-Sept. 12 versus Cumberlands of Kentucky.
-Sept. 26 versus Hardin-Simmons
-Oct. 17 versus Mary Hardin Baylor. It's Family Weekend.
- Oct. 31 versus Howard Payne. It's Homecoming Weekend.
- Nov. 14 versus Texas Lutheran.
