MC Graduate Wyatt Waters Receives Award for Excellence Feb. 25

Mississippi artist Wyatt Waters of Clinton will be among friends as he receives the Artistic Excellence award in Jackson Feb. 25.

Supporters of the 1977 Mississippi College graduate are invited to be on hand when Waters receives one of the prestigious 2010 Governor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts.

The Mississippi Arts Commission is inviting patrons of the arts to attend the celebration from 1-3 p.m. at Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church near the Capitol.

Each year, the Jackson-based agency teams with the Governor's Office to recognize outstanding talent, some of the very best creative energy in the Magnolia State.

Last year, the Mississippi Main Street Association recognized the Wyatt Waters Art Gallery in Clinton as its merchant of the year. The gallery in Olde Towne shared the honor with a Gulf Coast business. Waters is an award-winning watercolor artist who first was encouraged to pursue his craft under then-MC Art Department Chairman Sam Gore.

Two books have been published about his paintings. The work of the MC alumnus has been featured in numerous magazine and newspaper stories.

Waters will be in good company Feb. 25. Other winners include the Excellence in Broadcasting award going to the Grassroots Radio show on statewide Public Radio of Mississippi. The Mississippi Heritage award goes to Bessie Johnson of West Point. Lifetime Achievement goes to David "Honeyboy" Edwards of Shaw, among others.
