MC Library Collects Used Books

Mississippi College's Leland Speed Library will soon collect used books, video recordings, CDs and audiocassettes.

The items are being collected Saturday April 12 from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the alley side door of the building along College Street. The second drop off date on the Clinton campus is Saturday June 14 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Books and other items are needed for the MC library's Book Bazaar at the Alumni Hall gymnasium set for Sept. 26-27. Similar book sales have happened on and off in recent years. The last one a couple of years ago brought in $1,200, said library director Kathleen Hutchison.

The 2008 version promises to be bigger and better. "This time we are taking used book donations from the area," she said. "We hope to have thousands of books for sale."

Funds raised will enhance electronic and print resources at the library, she said.

The bazaar in late September will help at a time when the costs of books, periodicals and other items has skyrocketed for libraries nationwide, Hutchison said.

Despite rising costs and a ton of information available on the Internet, books remain a hot commodity with the public. Book sales are soaring around the nation. "We know people love books," Hutchison said. MC's library is home to more than 250,000 volumes.
