MC Music Professor James Sclater Wins 2009 Award

MC music professor James Sclater
Mississippi College music professor James Sclater recently received another award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

The talented music professor and composer previously has won the awards from this group every year since 1990. This new honor for Sclater in the concert music division covers the year 2009-2010.

Members of the Mississippi College community recently saw Sclater and music professor Angie Willoughby team up to perform musical selections during a reception Monday night. They supplied the entertainment at a meeting of leaders from the Mississippi Association of Colleges and Universities. Their performance was well-received by leaders from the state's private colleges, community colleges and state universities.

The 76th annual MAC conference attracted about 300 visitors to the Clinton campus.

The ASCAPLUS awards going to Sclater and other talented professionals seek to reflect the organization's continuing commitment to assist and encourage ASCAP composers, said Paul Williams, the president and chairman of the group's board. The organization maintains offices in New York City and Los Angeles.

An independent panel judges the awards based on each writer's original compositions as well as recent performances. Sclater's award was announced in a letter that Williams sent to MC Vice President for Academic Affairs Ron Howard in early October.
