MC School of Law Offers Free Tax Preparation Help

Taxpayers will soon receive free assistance from Mississippi College School of Law students and local attorneys to help them file their federal and state tax returns.

For the second consecutive year, the MC School of Law and Mission First Legal Aid Office will offer the service on Saturdays beginning Jan. 26 and concluding March 8. The tax clinic is scheduled from 9 a.m. until noon. Appointments are recommended, but not required.

"We will enable them to file their returns electronically," said Patricia Gandy, an attorney and director of the Mission First Legal Aid Office at 275 Roseneath Street. Persons coming for help will be able to use computers at the office to file their returns before the April 15 deadline.

To qualify for the free assistance, persons must qualify for the earned Income Tax Credit or have an adjusted gross income of less than $27,500. Taxpayers not qualifying for free filing may qualify for reduced fee filing. Taxpayers who e-file typically receive their refunds faster than traditional filers.

The legal aid office in West Jackson is located on the corner of Second Avenue and Roseneath Street near the Boys & Girls Club and Stewpot Community Services off West Capitol Street.
