Clinton area residents can receive free blood pressure checks, eye tests, hearing exams, cholesterol screenings and much more at an April 16 Health Fair at Brighton Park.

The Mississippi College School of Nursing is hosting the annual spring event sponsored by Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

The program at the Clinton park that Monday runs from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Timely discussion topics dealing with heart and kidney health, nutrition, cancer and strokes will be on the agenda that Monday for senior citizens and other visitors. The event’s theme revolves around the 2012 Olympics and encourages guests to “win the gold with good health.”

Plenty of door prizes will be given away and lunch will be available for Health Fair visitors.

The Mississippi College School of Nursing hosted a similar event in April 2011 at the Baptist Healthplex on the Christian university campus.

A few months ago, MC student nurses were out in full force at a Jackson health fair in November 2011 designed to help pastors, their wives and other Baptist leaders at the annual Mississippi Baptist Convention meeting.

The April 2012 health fair in Clinton comes at a time when Mississippi’s rates of heart disease and diabetes are the worst in the nation and severe obesity problems are afflicting much of the population, from children through adults.

Baptist Healthplex staffers say they will be involved in this spring’s event at Brighton Park. Representatives from companies in Mississippi’s health care industry are also expected to attend.

Opened in 2007, Brighton Park is located off Clinton-Raymond Road near the city’s fire station. Its scenic walking track and tennis courts are always popular with visitors.

“We feel like having it at Brighton Park, people will have a chance to get active as well,” with activities like horseshoes, shuffle board, croquet and table tennis being planned, said Chandra Fontenot, special services coordinator for the Clinton Parks and Recreation office.

Besides the Health Fair, lunch, and a slew of fun-filled activities, Brighton Park is marking Senior Citizen Appreciation Day on April 16. Typically, there are about 200 people enjoying lunch at the Health Fair each year, Fontenot said.
