MC Showcases "Little Women" Musical

"Little Women" opened as a musical on Broadway in January 2005 and the show will make its debut at Mississippi College on September 16.

Based on the popular Louisa May Alcott novel penned in 1869, the story centers around the March family, especially the four March sisters and their mother, Marmee. The book speaks to life’s struggles, and focuses on the strength of the family amid tough times.

Professor Kristen Johnson is director of the show with music faculty colleague Carol Joy Sparkman serving as musical director.

"This production promises to be one of the best Mississippi College has seen in recent years," Johnson says. "This production will be one that you want to attend more than once, and could easily serve as a great bonding experience for families, especially mothers and daughters."

Two casts consisting of 28 Mississippi College students each bring different strengths to the stage on the Clinton campus in both singing and acting, she says.

So come see the story of the March sisters – Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy – that is told in song at the Jean Pittman Williams Recital Hall on the Clinton campus.

A member of the cast, MC senior Casey Stevens, 21, of Clinton says he auditioned for the show because he wanted to "do something out of the comfort zone." The Clinton High graduate landed the part of John Brooke, who is married to one of the sisters. A member of a Baptist student Union singing group at MC, Stevens, who’s a kinesiology major, also gets a chance to sing some tunes in “Little Women."

Performance times and dates for the show are Sept. 16, 17, 18, 23, 24 and 25 at 7 p.m. and Sept. 19 and 26 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students from MC and other schools with valid
student identification cards.

Tickets for the Department of Music production can be purchased at the door.  It is advised to reserve tickets in advance by calling 601-925-3440.
