MC Singers and Choctaw Chorus Perform Mozart’s Requiem

Blending their voices with the Jackson Choral Society, Mississippi College students will perform Mozart’s “Requiem” in concert this spring.

The MC Singers and Choctaw Chorus will team with the Jackson Choral Society along with a 24-piece professional chamber orchestra on the Clinton campus. MC choral activities director Mark Nabholz will serve as the conductor at the April 11 program with nearly 165 singers and orchestra players involved.

The final masterpiece by the iconic Austrian composer, “Requiem” was completed following Mozart’s death on December 5, 1791.

“This promises to be a terrific concert,” says Nabholz, the new artistic director of the Jackson Choral Society. “Mozart’s Requiem is a landmark in the Western musical canon.”

Wolfgang Mozart, who composed splendid operas, concertos and symphonies, has delighted musical audiences for centuries with “Requiem.” It represents “some of the most exciting and beautiful music ever written,” Nabholz says.

The program will also features an opera overture and a setting of the “Ave verum Corpus,” both by Franz Xaver Sussmayr. He’s best known as the composer who finished “Requiem” after Mozart’s death.

The April 11 concert is scheduled for Mississippi College’s Swor Auditorium. Sponsored by the MC Department of Music, the Monday evening program begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $10 for general admission, and $8 for faculty/staff/senior citizens. Children and students will be admitted free. There also will be an opening performance by the combined musical groups in Jackson on April 10 at 3 p.m.
