About 300 student leaders from private schools in Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas visited Mississippi College Wednesday to polish their leadership skills and do a little networking.

They were on the Clinton campus for the Mississippi Private School Association's 2009 Honor Society convention. Student leaders were challenged by keynote speaker Barbie Bassett, the chief meteorologist at WLBT-TV 3 in Jackson, to set goals.

"I'm a goal-oriented person," said Bassett, a mother of three young children and a Mississippi College graduate. "I like challenges."

Bassett urged students to "find something you enjoy doing" and practice it repeatedly. Holding degrees from MC and Mississippi State University, the award-winning meteorologist also teaches a class on the Clinton campus in the Department of Communications.

During remarks at Swor Auditorium, the Mississippi native also encouraged students to study hard in high school and earn good grades. It should make the job of applying to college a little less stressful when they become seniors. "Do your best now."

The MPSA student leaders came from Greenville Christian School, Madison-Ridgeland Academy, University Christian School, Hillcrest Christian School and Brookhaven Academy, among others. They also took care of business. Brandon Self of Madison-Ridgeland Academy was elected the new president of the MPSA Honor Society for 2009-2010. He succeeds outgoing president Jason Giangrosso of Simpson Academy.

Others elected to new posts included Tinsley Colmer of University Christian School in Flowood becomes the new secretary/treasurer, while Anna Hamill of Madison-Ridgeland Academy was named to lead publicity efforts.

The MPSA is the accrediting agency for more than 120 private schools in the tri-state area. Led by executive director David Derrick and director of activities Les Triplett, the group encourages student participation in band, student government, athletics and other campus activities.

Margaret Rogers, the MPSA sponsor from Brandon, said out-of-state schools such as Marvel Academy in Arkansas and River Oak in Louisiana sent representatives to the blitz of meetings. After lunch at the MC cafeteria, the students tested their knowledge in a quiz bowl.

Some of the students came to the meetings with CSI T-shirts - standing for Christ, strength and integrity. A number of the students say they will consider the 4,900-student Christian university in Clinton when they size up their college choices.
