Michaela Parker Wins $500 Scholarship from the Radio People

MC communication major Michaela Parker of Ackerman receives a $500 scholarship from the Radio People.

A talented Mississippi College communication major, Michaela Parker received a $500 scholarship from the Radio People.

The Ridgeland-based company remains the umbrella group for several Mississippi radio stations, including U.S. 96.3, Mix 98.7 and Y101.7.

A French Camp Academy graduate, Michela continues to work weekends as a broadcaster for WFCA-FM. It’s a job she’s held since she was an FCA freshman.

“It’s a really cool way to communicate the Gospel,” Parker says of her work at the 100,000-watt radio station in rural north Mississippi. The weekend job helps pay for her costs at Baptist-affiliated Mississippi College.

The 20-year-old MC junior from Ackerman also works as a graphic designer and copywriter for the “Mississippi College Tribesman,” the university’s yearbook. She attended East Mississippi Community College in Mayhew before enrolling at Mississippi College in 2013.

Communication professor Reid Vance says Parker is an outstanding choice for the award. Radio People executives presented her with the scholarship in one of his communication classes in early February.

“She’s already demonstrated quality work in the classroom and through her job at WFCA-FM in French Camp,” Vance said. “She has a bright future in the industry if she chooses to pursue it.”

Parker brings experience in social media, photography and as the creator of promotional videos to the table. She’s thrilled to get the annual award from the Radio People.

“It is an honor. I’m thankful to them,” Michaela said. She thanked Vance for submitting her name for the scholarship.

Vance is among several top-notch professors in the Department of Communication on the Clinton campus, Michaela says. “The professors are outstanding. I love it here.”
