Mississippi College and Delta State Blood Drive Scores Victory for Mississippians

Dawn Woods of MBS presents the trophy to MC's SGA president Chip Wilson and Director of Student Development Jonathan Nutt

Mississippi College-Delta State competition in November produced 129 new pints of blood and that’s a huge victory for Mississippians.

Results released at Saturday’s Gulf South Conference football game in Cleveland show MC supporters donated 81 pints of blood to 48 for Delta State.

Based in Flowood, Mississippi Blood Services organized the two-day drive between the in-state athletic rivals in the GSC.

MC’s Phi Theta Kappa Alumni Association played a major role in the community service project on the Clinton campus.

“We are thrilled to be a part of giving back to the community and we’re glad to beat Delta State in this competition,” says Brandi Chancellor, coordinator of transfer recruitment with the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies.

Founded in 1979, Mississippi Blood Services supplies blood to 49 hospitals across the Magnolia State.

“I’m really proud of the efforts that PTK members put in,” said MC junior Kaylie Bradshaw, 21, of Ellisville, one of the group’s leaders. It’s for a good cause that will save lives, said the biological sciences/medical sciences major. “I hope to be part of it next year.”

MC Student Government Association President Chip Wilson of Memphis and Jonathan Nutt, director of student development, accepted the winning trophy from MBS staffer Dawn Woods at Saturday’s football game.

Delta State defeated the MC Choctaws 27-3 on the football field at DSU’s Homecoming, captured the Heritage Bowl trophy and won the 2014 Gulf South Conference championship.

But winning the blood drive was pretty important, too, MC leaders say.

“It’s awesome that MC students, faculty and staff were able to save so many lives in Mississippi,” Nutt said.

Tammy L. Bouchillon of Mississippi Blood Services says the Mississippi College-Delta State blood drive competition will become an annual event. Both schools competed in annual blood drives when MC was part of the GSC through 1995. MC is transitioning to NCAA Division II athletics and returned to Gulf South Conference action this fall.

Other colleges taking part in MBS drives include Mississippi State, Southern Miss, the University of Mississippi, Jackson State and Alcorn State.
