Mississippi College Bookstore Celebrates Renovations

Scores of Mississippi College Bookstore customers turned out for the punch, the bargains and a chance to win a TV.

It was part of the bookstore's ribbon-cutting Wednesday morning to celebrate a series of renovations, more like an innovative face lift for the store in the basement of Alumni Hall.

"It's a nice remodel," said MC sophomore Matthew Howard, 19, of Franklin County as the social work major eyed T-shirts bearing the Christian university's logo. "It's sharper than before. This will be good for students."

MC freshman Bryce Bond, 20, of Beaumont, Texas agreed. The new carpet, the piped in music, the new look for the windows and other improvements are all nice, he said.

MC Vice President for Administration and Government Relations Steve Stanford handled the honors at the ribbon-cutting. "We appreciate our relationship with Follett and with the students," he said. Efforts continue to make textbooks for MC students more affordable, he added.

Stanford made sure to thank everybody for coming.

Based in Illinois, Follett oversees about 840 college bookstores around the USA and Canada, including accounts with Florida State University in Tallahassee, and James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Many of the college bookstores are in Mississippi.

Joining the festive occasion with balloons all over the store was Kieran Keenan, vice president for sales and operations with Follett.

"This has turned out very well," she said. The Follett employee was on hand for the transition when the MC Bookstore became part of the Follett family six years ago. The company based in Oak Brook, Illinois has been in business since 1873.

"We want people to come and browse," Keenan said. "We want them to be proud of the campus and store."

MC accounting student Zchicheng "Johnson" Liang, a native of China and star player on MC's nationally ranked table tennis team, signed up to win the TV in the drawing. He also purchased a calculator Wednesday morning. "I like this store."

The bookstore event attracted a large delegation of the MC family including Vice President for Academic Affairs Ron Howard, Vice President for Christian Development Eric Pratt, Alumni Affairs Director Ross Aven, Vice President for Advancement Bill Townsend and business professor Lloyd Roberts.

Those who missed out are encouraged to shop at the store throughout the academic year on the Clinton campus.
