Mississippi College Debaters Excel

Mississippi College debaters excelled in the Lumberjack Showdown Debate Tournament in Texas.

MC senior Chase Porter of Picayune stayed on top of his game as one of the South's premier debaters. He won the varsity division of the tournament held Nov. 8-9 at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches.

"Chase's accomplishments in this tournament are truly outstanding," said MC communication professor Merle Ziegler, the MC debate team coach. "Through skill and determination he was able to defeat every debater he faced in the elimination rounds to finally win the varsity division of the tournament."

Porter, who placed as high as 5th in the national debate tournament last year, is in his final year of competitive debate. He served as vice president of the MC Student Government Association in 2007-2008.

There were a total of 60 debaters entered from a dozen universities. Besides MC, Louisiana College, Union University, Louisiana State University, Sam Houston State University, Harding University, the College of Southern Idaho, East Texas Baptist and the University of Central Arkansas were among others competing.
