Mississippi College Hosts Pigskin for Stewpot Game on June 10

Gov. Haley Barbour's Bombers will tackle the Media Giants in a flag football game at Mississippi College to benefit Stewpot.

Dubbed “Pigskin for Stewpot,” the June 10 showdown will be held at Robinson-Hale Stadium on the Clinton campus. Fans are encouraged to bring canned foods to the stadium to help the non-profit ministry serve meals to Mississippi's homeless in downtown Jackson.

Hundreds of MC campers from churches around the South are expected to be in the stands for the game that Thursday beginning at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free. The event is open to the public.

After five years of playing charity softball games at the Mississippi Braves' Trustmark Park in Pearl, the Bombers and Media Giants felt it was time for a change. AT&T is the big sponsor for this year's event.

Since 2005, the games have prompted corporate sponsors to chip in a total of more than $120,000 to help Habitat and Stewpot. The Bombers hold a 4-1 edge in the annual series.

The flag football game will have a number of Mississippi College connections. MC head football coach Norman Joseph and social work professor Brian Anderson, who's an assistant basketball coach at Callaway High, will manage the Media Giants. MC music professor Lewis Oswalt will serve as the game's public address announcer.

The media team will include former Mississippi State quarterback Matt Wyatt, who's a Tupelo sportscaster, WAPT-16 news anchor Scott Simmons, and staffers from Mississippi Public Broadcasting, WJTV-12, Jackson radio station 96.3, the “Clarion-Ledger” and the Salvation Army.

The Barbour Bombers, who play softball in a league in Ridgeland, will feature some of the governor's relatives, such as nephew Austin Barbour, plus a number of political supporters. Gov. Barbour is expected to coach his team that evening on the MC campus.

“No matter which team scores the most touchdowns, the event figures to be a winner for Stewpot,” said Andy Kanengiser, the event organizer and MC's university news coordinator. “We hope it will encourage folks to serve as Stewpot volunteers and donate food during these tough economic times.”
