Mississippi College Promotes Part-Time Jobs Fair

Bass Pro Shops brought a mounted head of a deer to Mississippi College and that proved to be the biggest attention getter at MC's part-time jobs fair.

"The deer got a lot of heads turned," said Angela Diedrick, a manager at Bass Pro's store off I-20 in Pearl.

Sitting at a table through the early afternoon hours, Diedrick and co-worker Jeff Howerton worked the lunch crowd at MC 's cafeteria Wednesday. They were busy recruiting students to the store's family summer camp starting June 5. Fifteen part-time jobs are up for grabs.

MC senior Kayla Thompson, a business administration major from Jackson, stopped to chat with Diedrick for a few moments. She considers herself to be a Bass Pro fan and shopper. "It is one of the nicest I've seen," she said of the Pearl store.

At nearby tables, there were representatives from eight businesses on hand, including restaurants like Newks, and banks like BankPlus, trying to woo MC students for part-time work.

Pleased with the turnout, Shirley McDonald, a staff specialist at the BankPlus headquarters in Ridgeland, says student traffic is up over last year. Students interested in applying were directed to the company's Web site.

The MC Office of Career Services sponsored the event at the cafeteria. About 75 to 100 students participated, said assistant director Hayley Taff. The office sponsored a much larger Career Day in February.

Staffers in her office in Nelson Hall are also encouraging students to enhance their resumes, improve their interview skills and step up their job searches before May graduation on the Clinton campus.
