Mississippi College Singers Present Homecoming Concert

A Mississippi College Singers concert, festive parade and Choctaws football game with Florida Tech are in the growing lineup of 2015 Homecoming activities on the Clinton campus.

Music lovers shouldn’t miss the award-winning MC Singers as they perform under the direction of conductor Mark Nabholz. The Music Department’s premier choral group entertains audiences on October 24 at 1:30 p.m. at Provine Chapel. Admission is free and the event that Saturday is open to the public.

“Provine is such a great acoustical space for choral singing,” Nabholz says.

The MC Singers are a talented 55-member student choir that’s been showcased at concerts across the United States. Engagements abroad have taken the mixed-voice ensemble to England, Italy, Slovenia and South Africa in recent years.

Arriving over the summer, Nabholz leads choral music programs at the Christian university after working in a similar capacity at Erskine College in South Carolina.

Paint the Town Blue & Gold remains the theme of MC’s 2015 Homecoming October 22-24. Booked are over three dozen events for thousands of alums from around the USA and across the globe.

It’s one of the signature events for a Baptist-affiliated university that marks its 190th anniversary during Founder’s Day in January 2016.

Among key Homecoming activities:

--The 50-Year Club Reunion at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday October 22. Cost for the gathering for alums for graduated a half-century ago or earlier will be $15. It’s set for 6:30 p.m. that evening at Anderson Hall in the B.C. Rogers Student Center.

--The Homecoming Golf Tournament on Friday October 23 is 11 a.m. at the Live Oaks Golf Course in Jackson. The fee for players is $50.

--The National Alumni Association meeting and awards dinner is 6 p.m. on October 23 at Anderson Hall. The cost is $20.

Award winners include: Texas businessman Dr. Louis Lau, MC’s Alumnus of the Year, and “Clinton Courier” executive Clay Mansell, the Young Alumnus of the year. Co-recipients of the Order of the Golden Arrow: MC School of Education Dean Don Locke of Clinton and businessman Mark H. Wright. The late Mike Moskau and his wife, Ginger, are winners of the Award of Excellence.

--MC students perform hilarious skits at the Homecoming Follies at 7 p.m. Friday evening at Swor Auditorium. Tickets cost $15.

--Saturday’s activities begin with the Hap Hudson Homecoming 5K run at 8 a.m. at Cockroft Hall. The race winds through Olde Towne Clinton and ends at the track at Robinson-Hale Stadium.

At 10 a.m., photojournalist Barbara Gauntt and MC art treasure Sam Gore of Clinton will sign copies of Barbara’s book “Samuel L. Gore: Blessed With Tired Hands.” Saturday’s event takes place at the Leland Speed Library with a reception at the Gore Galleries.

Homecoming guests are invited to see North America’s No. 1 collegiate table tennis team in action on October 24. Led by extraordinary players from China, MC faces Dixie Division rivals from schools in Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana. The tournament begins 9 a.m. at Alumni Gym. Admission is free.

Hundreds of students, staff, alumni and faculty will travel in cars along College Street for the 1 p.m. Homecoming Parade. It’s a good way to celebrate the Choctaw spirit.

Football fans should cheer for the Blue & Gold at Saturday’s Gulf South Conference football game as the Choctaws face Florida Tech. The contest at Robinson-Hale Stadium kicks off at 3 p.m.

There are many other activities in the Homecoming slate at the 5,152-student university.

Rebecca McCarty, a 2004 graduate and president of the MC Alumni Association, hopes to see many alums make the trip to Clinton.

“Homecoming 2015 is the perfect time to once again experience the nostalgia, time-honored traditions and fun, friendly atmosphere that unites all of us who love Mississippi College,” McCarty said.
