Mississippi College Staff Club Prepares for 2009-2010 Season

Mississippi Staff Club offers fabulous programs plus opens doors for dozens of MC employees to get to know one another over lunch.

Led by President Kathy Gibbs, a secretary in the Department of Kinesiology, the 2009-2010 Staff Club is quietly working behind the scenes to plan another great year. Officers set a planning meeting for July 24 to discuss upcoming activities.
Gibbs succeeded Lynda Street, the secretary of Christian Studies, who led the Staff Club through an eventful 2008-2009 academic year. Trips to Providence Hill Farm, home of the MC equestrian team, a visit to the Mississippi College School of Law in downtown Jackson, and a superb performance by Ballet Magnificat were among the highlights.
And who can forget how it all got started in the fall of 2008 with MC Staff Club members participating in hilarious karaoke performances outside Jazzman's. Surely, the judges of TV's "American Idol" would have given the performances a thumbs up. Well, at least in most cases, as staffers sang their hearts out and laughed a little after enjoying lunch provided by President Lee Royce.

Angie Miller is serving as the Staff Club's 2009-2010 president-elect. She's a programmer in the office of computer services. Other new leaders include Mary Beth Graves, the group's vice president and a secretary at the biology department.

"Last year was wonderful getting to know everybody," said Tina Reeves, the new secretary of the Staff Club. "Last year I loved it when Ballet Magnificat came and performed for us. We had some really good meetings last year," added the secretary in the MC chemistry department. The year ended in the spring when "Dr. Royce treated us to a picnic at Providence Hill Farm - that was wonderful," she said.

Last year's Staff Club joining fee was $7 and that was a very good investment, said Reeves, a member of the club for five years. "We also have different community projects going on," she said.

"Our very successful service projects included gifts and monetary contributions to CARA (the no-kill animal shelter) and the Pregnancy Crisis Center as well as monetary contributions to Ballet Magnificat," Street said as she reflected back on the past year.

The Staff Club officers in 2008-2009 "worked very well together and Staff Club members responded positively to our leadership," Street said.

She expects Kathy Gibbs will do a tremendous job as president. She brings many positives including her " willingness to serve, a personal knowledge of the staff campuswide and experience" as a past president a few years ago, Street said.

For more information, contact Kathy Gibbs at 601-925-3348 or kgibbs@mc.edu or visit with other Staff Club officers. Other leaders include treasurer Emily Diffenderfer, chaplain Vicki Williams, service chairman Shea Elkins, and social chairman Laura Prevost. MC Staff Club officers encourage staffers, whether they are newcomers to the Clinton campus or veterans, to join their ranks!
