Music Department Celebrates Legacy Room at Mississippi College

Music professor Mark Nabholz leads MC Singers in concert on September 14 to salute the Legacy Room in Aven Hall.

Mississippi College Singers led the celebration at the newly renovated choir room on the Clinton campus.

A state-of-the art sound system, cabinets, rebuilt risers, and a new ceiling are among dramatic improvements to the Music Department’s Legacy Room.

An anonymous lead gift, and assistance from other contributors made the project possible in Aven Hall.

For the first time, conductor Mark Nabholz led the MC Singers during two concerts Monday evening to trumpet the facility’s rebirth.

The open house marked the inaugural performance in the third floor Legacy Room. University administrators, faculty, staff, students and donors turned out for the special occasion.

“I was pleased with the attendance of so many of the donors who contributed to the project,” said Music Department chair Angela Willoughby. “Everyone was complimentary of the improvements to the room, and the Singers’ performance.”

Professor Lewis Oswalt appreciates the room’s significance in the Music Department’s history.

“Several generations of Mississippi College students have grown musically and spiritually through their experiences in this room,” Oswalt said.

With new equipment, better acoustics, new flooring and much more at the Legacy Room, “this will allow us to continue that training in an environment that is both attractive and functional,” he said.

The director of choral activities, Nabholz commended Willoughby and the MC Music Legacy for their fund-raising leadership. The successful fund drive at the Baptist-affiliated university began last fall.

The Legacy Room, he said, will benefit music students for years to come.

With Nabholz conducting and professor Robert Knupp serving as the piano accompanist, the MC Singers performed such selections as “Come, Ye that Love the Lord.”
