New Economic Education Center Hosts Workshop for Teachers

Opening its doors in late July with a workshop for about a dozen Clinton teachers, the center is housed in Self Hall, home of the School of Business.
The purpose of the center is to partner with the Mississippi Council for Economic Education and boost economic literacy among teachers and students in the region.
"We will do a little recruiting and get other schools" involved, Smith said.
Mississippi College, Mississippi State University and the University of Southern Mississippi are presently working with the Jackson-based Mississippi council to offer training to teachers around the Magnolia State. In recent years, the council has trained more than 4,300 teachers and impacted more than 430,000 students statewide. The effort in Mississippi is part of a nationwide campaign to step up economics education for millions of students.
A Clintonian, Smith received a bachelor's degree from MC in 2001 and a master's in 2004, both from the Christian university's School of Business in 2004. He teaches accounting and finance classes at MC in addition to his new duties as the center's director.
Smith will be teaching classes at an Oct. 31 workshop on the Clinton campus designed to enhance classroom skills for economics educators. He will teach the fundamentals of economics, microeconomics, macroeconomics, international economics and personal finance.
The workshop in Room 304 Self Hall will run from 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The MC professor is hoping about 15 to 20 teachers will attend.
The MC center will provide a stipend so the teachers can attend the Oct. 31 workshop free of charge. For more details, contact Chris Smith at 601.925.3412.
