Science and Math Students Compete at Mississippi College

Talented math and students from Clinton High, Madison Central, Long Beach High, DeSoto Central and dozens of other schools will compete at Mississippi College in early February.

They're taking tests and competing for scholarships at MC's 36th annual Science and Mathematics Tournament. About 110 schools have already signed up and they will bring up to 1,200 high school students to the Clinton campus Feb. 4-5.

Others taking teams to the Mississippi College event include Northwest Rankin, Horn Lake High, Jackson Academy, Jackson Prep and Hancock High.

Last year, teams from Clinton High, Jackson Prep, Indianola Academy, St. Andrews Episcopal School and Walnut High were among those leaving the MC campus with trophies after the awards ceremony at Swor Auditorium.

As many as a dozen students from each school participate in the battery of math and science tests developed by MC professors. The 50-minute written exams are in the fields of biology, chemistry, computer science, math and physics.

All those placing in the top 20 percent on each test are eligible for MC scholarships ranging between $300 and $2,000 per year.
