Mississippi College opens the sixth season of the James S. Sclater Chamber Music Series.

Music lovers are invited to the Jean Pittman Williams Recital Hall for the first concert of the season on September 11. The series is a tribute to the nationally celebrated composer and retired MC professor from Clinton.

The 7:30 p.m. program that Friday evening will feature Vivaldi’s “Summer” as well as music by James Sclater, Mozart and Schumann. Sclater served as a distinguished MC music professor for four decades before retiring in 2010.

Tickets cost $20 for adults and $5 for students.

Dr. Sclater has penned a new work “Epitaphs and Memorials” for a string quartet. It was written in remembrance of five musicians who suffered as victims of Nazi concentration camps during World War II. The Mississippian’s work premiered on the 70th anniversary of VE Day in May 2015.

The Sclater series also welcomes back Marta Szlubowska, concertmistress of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra in Jackson. She will perform Vivaldi’s “Summer.”

Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance. For ticket reservations, call 601-925-3440 or email music@mc.edu. Tickets can also be purchased online at mc.edu/marketplace.
