Shakespeare Romantic Comedy Twelfth Night Plays at Mississippi College

William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night'' will be presented at MC March 31-April 2

William Shakespeare’s romantic comedy “Twelfth Night” should trigger lots of laughter during Mississippi College performances this spring.

MC’s production will update the Englishman’s classic with hit tunes from the 1960s and funny scenes that resemble hilarious skits on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.”

The Communication Department on the Clinton campus teams with the English Department to present this fun-filled show at Jennings Courtyard March 31-April 2. Alumni Gym will serve as the alternate venue if it rains. Audiences chuckled centuries ago when the comedy made its stage debut in 1602.

Shakespeare’s version focuses on the mythical kingdom of Illyria and a nobleman named Duke Orsino. He likes to listen to music while he pines away for the love of his life, Lady Olivia. But she’s mourning for her dead brother. And the plot thickens.

“The world of this show is a madcap mashup of sublime love,” says director Phyllis Seawright. The 21st Century production at Mississippi College, adds the communication professor, appeals to people who relish the humor of contemporary comics like Mike Myers and Kevin Hart.

MC student Andrew Wilson of Brandon is delighted to be part of the cast. “Practice is a great release from the stresses of senior year.”

On stage, Wilson plays the role of Sir Andrew Aguecheek, and it seems to fit his personality. During the show, Andrew acts pretty goofy. “I cut up the whole time.”

Another performer, MC student Teagan Faust of Crestview, Florida is excited to appear in “Twelfth Night.”

Also known as “What You Will,” Shakespeare’s comedy immediately won over Teagan. She portrays the character, Maria. “The first time I read the script, I completely fell in love with it.”

Audiences loved it for generations. Performances were sold out at London’s West End. The show has played along New York’s Broadway. And there’s been a movie production, too.

Tickets cost $7 for students, MC employees and senior adults. The price is $10 for other adults. Tickets cost $4 per person for groups of 20 or more. Performances are set for 10 a.m. on March 31 and April 1. Shows begin at 7 p.m. on April 1-2. There will be a 2:30 p.m. performance on April 3.
