Steak Dinner Raises Funds for South Africa Trip

MC Singers

A steak dinner at a Clinton church will help the Mississippi College Singers pay for their trip to South Africa for a series of concerts next spring.

The price for the October 9 dinner at Morrison Heights Baptist Church will be $30. The Saturday evening event begins at 6:30 p.m. and will include entertainment from the MC Department of Music.

The long journey for the MC Singers will stretch from May 9-20 in 2011. The group will perform at churches and other venues in South Africa. The choir will also visit Soweto and tour an orphanage. Details are still being worked out for a joint concert with the Chamber Choir of South Africa.

This will be the third international tour since 2004 for the award-winning MC Singers. The group took 38 members to cities in Europe for a series of concerts in May 2008.

About 30 to 40 members of the 55-member group are expected to make the trip to South Africa.

The cost of the overseas trip isn’t cheap.

James Meaders, chairman of the MC Music Department, estimates the cost at $4,000 per student.

Additional fund-raising events include a Silent Auction to be held on the Quad at Homecoming, October 16 and a pre-Thanksgiving sale of smoked turkeys and Boston butts.
