Symphonic Winds Presents Free Concert Feb. 23

Bring your flashlights!

That's what members of the Mississippi College Symphonic Winds were instructed to do as part of an upcoming Feb. 23 concert.

With flashlights in hand, dozens of MC students in the group will put a nice spotlight on one of the numbers they will perform.

The concert that evening in Swor Auditorium on the Clinton campus is a bargain - the 7:30 p.m. performance is free.

The concert is titled "Picture This!" and consists entirely of music with a visual component, says Craig S. Young, MC director of bands.

Fans of the 52-member Symphonic Winds orchestra are in for a treat. MC art professor Steve Glaze will be working on a sculpture while the group performs a piece titled "Resting in the Peace of His Hands" by John Gibson.

Also during the concert, an Irish dance company will perform, while the group plays Tomochito Tatebe's "Suite on Celtic Folk Songs."

In addition, Norman Dello Joio's "Scenes from the Louvre" will be accompanied by a film about the famous museum in France.

As for the flashlights, members of the group will be asked to turn on the lights for one of the musical numbers once Swor Auditorium gets completely dark.

The MC Symphonic Winds traditionally puts its focus on composers of the 20th Century, but all periods of music are performed.

Music will also be in the air Tuesday Feb. 9 at Swor Auditorium. The MC Music Department honors recital will feature instrumentalists and vocalists chosen by audition. They will be accompanied by members of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra. The concert begins at 7:30 pm.
