Teresa Floyd Keynotes December Commencements at Mississippi College

Teresa Floyd

Teresa Floyd earned “A” grades as a mathematics professor at Mississippi College for more than three decades.

Now retired, the Corinth native returns to the Clinton campus to serve as keynote speaker at two MC commencements on December 16.

Selected MC’s Distinguished Professor of the Year for 2015-16, Floyd will address undergraduates at 2 p.m. that Friday at the A.E. Wood Coliseum. She will speak to Graduate School and Law School ceremonies that evening at 7 p.m. in the same facility known as the Golden Dome.

Floyd joined the MC Mathematics Department faculty in 1983 after teaching her favorite subject for a dozen years at public and private schools.

Whether she’s teaching calculus, elementary statistics or Geometry, Floyd always did it with passion in her classrooms. At the same time, she would show tough love to students who weren’t performing up to par.

Colleagues describe Dr. Floyd as a phenomenal teacher who cared deeply about her students. At times, Teresa cooked breakfast for her students prior to their exams to ensure they were at their best.

A graduate of Alcorn Central High School, Floyd received her bachelor’s degree at Mississippi State University. She picked up her master’s in education at Mississippi College and a doctorate at the University of Missouri.

At Mississippi College, Floyd devoted more than 30 years to assisting the statewide mathematics and science competition on the Clinton campus. It allowed successful high school students across the state an opportunity to receive scholarships of $2,000 per-year to attend MC.

Over the years, Floyd trained many of her students to become top-notch math teachers.

Teresa Floyd remains an avid Lady Choctaws basketball fan. She usually sits on the front row at Mike Jones Court offering words of encouragement to players wearing the Blue & Gold on the hardwood.

In her spare time, Floyd enjoys riding on her Harley Davidson motorcycle. She and her husband, Pat, stay busy with their grandchildren.

The keynote speaker at the MC School of Nursing commencement on December 16 will be Kimberly Sharp, the school’s dean. The event begins 11 a.m. that Friday at Swor Auditorium. A native of Canada, Dr. Sharp is the former nursing dean at Louisiana College.
