Turkey Dash Race Signs Up Runners and Walkers

MC Physician Assistants Class of 2018

Mississippians will step things up while getting good exercise at the first annual Turkey Dash in Clinton.

The Mississippi College Department of Physician Assistant Studies is sponsoring the November 19 event. Participants at the 5K Run/Walk get started at 8 a.m. that Saturday morning at First Baptist Church Clinton.

Kimberly Watson and others in the PA Class of 2018, will be heavily involved in the Turkey Dash, that comes a few days before Thanksgiving. Some graduate students are entered in the race, while others will stick around to make sure things run smoothly.

A 26-year-old Clinton resident, Watson serves as the event’s fund-raising chair. Funds generated will help MC’s PA students attend the American Association of Physician Assistants convention in May 2017.

The run/walk isn’t just a nice fund-raiser. It will give participants time along the way to burn calories. Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. Early pickup of event packets will be Friday November 18 at the Baptist Healthplex from 4-6 p.m.

MC physician assistant students sponsored other community-minded events this fall. The students sponsored a blood drive on the Clinton campus in October.

Enrolling in the 30-month physician assistant program happened for a reason for Kimberly Watson. Her parents, Robert and Kathy McRaney of Raymond, had open heart surgery in 2013.

“A physician assistant helped both of them,” said Watson, a University of Southern Mississippi graduate. “It inspired me. We are lacking in healthcare in Mississippi.”

Pre-registration costs for the event will be $25 and it will be $30 the day of the Turkey Dash. A T-shirt will go to participants. Parking will be available at the Baptist Healthplex, headquarters of MC’s physician assistant program.
