WLBT-TV 3 Anchor Cheryl Lasseter Lectures at Mississippi College

WLBT-TV 3 Anchor Cheryl Lasseter

An award-winning news anchor at WLBT-TV 3 in Jackson for nearly 15 years, Cheryl Lasseter will return to her alma mater to address Mississippi College communication students.

The Mississippian will speak as part of the 2015 Purser Hewitt Lecture Series March 2-3 on the Clinton campus. Nearly a decade ago, the series was established in honor of the late “Clarion-Ledger” editor. His two daughters created the Department of Communication’s annual lecture series.

Cheryl is the recipient of numerous Associated Press broadcasting awards, including three first place honors for outstanding investigative reporting. In December 2006, Lasseter received a master’s in applied communication at MC with a 4.0 grade point average.

Previous speakers at the Hewitt lecture series have included: former “Clarion-Ledger” editor Ronnie Agnew, now executive director of Mississippi Public Broadcasting, “Clarion-Ledger” cartoonist Marshall Ramsey, and Mississippi College journalism graduate Kyle Martin, a marketing specialist with the Wounded Warrior Project. Others have included syndicated newspaper columnist Charlie Mitchell, who’s the assistant dean of the University of Mississippi School of Journalism, and former MC professor Douglas Starr.

Lasseter grew up in Bel Air, Maryland about 45 minutes from Baltimore. After working briefly in the professional baseball world at Orioles Park at Camden Yards, she discovered her heart was in TV journalism. Cheryl landed her first job in TV news at WMDT-TV in Salisbury, Maryland. She later worked as a reporter at WLEX-TV in Lexington, Kentucky before moving to Jackson, Mississippi and WLBT-TV 3 in October 2000.

Cheryl’s talent for on-camera TV work caught the eye of Hollywood’s movie industry. She appeared in the hit film “The Runaway Bride.” The MC graduate was a perfect fit for the part. Her role was to chase actor Richard Gere down the street, while toting a TV microphone.

The WLBT-TV anchor is married and a busy parent with two sons. Sean Michael Lasseter was born in December 2002, and Mason Wayne Lasseter was born in December 2007. Away from WLBT-TV 3 studios, she’s active in the metro Jackson community. Cheryl is a May 2012 graduate of the FBI Citizens Academy at its Jackson Division.

During her visit to the Clinton campus. Lasseter will speak to several communication classes at Aven Hall, field questions and keynote a Department of Communication luncheon on the Clinton campus.
