November 2 was a historic day for Mississippi College. The crowd of alumni and friends assembled for the 1996 Homecoming celebration was witness to a new chapter in the life of this grand institution - they participated in the dawning of a new era at their alma mater. The day marked the kick-off of a capital campaign that will change the face of Mississippi College forever.
"A NEW
DAWN" is more than just the name of this campaign - it signals the beginning
of what promises to be Mississippi College's brightest days. This
theme captures the hopes and dreams of alumni and friends everywhere and
reminds us that, although the University is now 171-years old, there has
never been a greater need for its mission of values-based Christian higher
education. In a world of decreasing personal responsibility and increasing
ethical uncertainty, Mississippi College must be prepared to stand
for more than just excellence in academics. The future demands that
we offer a viable alternative to young people who seek, not simply to be
educated, but to be taught by people who are grounded in faith and possess
a central core of values.
The time has never been better for Mississippi College to step forward and become known as the Christian university of the South. Throughout the nation, there is a call for education that blends values and ethics with sound academic programming. This has been our hallmark for nearly two centuries. We simply need to position ourselves to tell Mississippi College's story and do it in a way that brings credit to God and His abiding love and grace. God's hand is truly on Mississippi College. How else can one explain the times that this institution has been challenged only to emerge brighter and stronger because of our challenges. You may never know how much your support through time, resources, and prayer has meant to Mississippi College. Because of your dedication and stewardship in the past, Mississippi College is now stronger and more vibrant than it has ever been.
But we're not finished. Together, we must prepare for the new millennium. We must move Mississippi College into the best position for service to God and our fellowman for the next generations. We must finish what has been started. Through this campaign - the likes of which has not been undertaken in the history of this University - we will construct new buildings, create professorships, and endow scholarships. We will provide Mississippi College with everything necessary to succeed in the 21st century. Our studies show this goal achievable, but so much depends on you. The leadership of Mississippi College has stepped forward in faith. Now we look to you to make this vision a reality. It takes all of us working together, praying together, and giving together. We are only as strong as our weakest fink. Let us strive today to forge an unbreakable chain of love and support.
The future is too important to depend on the generosity of our neighbors. We should take to heart the credo of one of our most generous families, "spend a little, save a little, and give a little." It takes all of us. As those alumni and friends representing Mississippi College approach you to help, all I ask is that you consider what Mississippi College has meant to you and your family. Then make a gift that is commensurate to your commitment to the future of Mississippi College. God has been preparing us for just this moment in time. Let's stand up and answer this challenge. Together we will make the difference!
