STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM
London Semester Program
The program is built around the idea that an educated person is a
citizen of the world. We believe that an intense program of study in
one of the major cities of Europe expands student's horizons and gives
them the understanding and the confidence to pursue any goal. In keeping
with the spirit of the purpose of MC, this program is an extension
of Mississippi College in a London setting. The same high academic
standards are maintained for this program as with any other MC endeavor. Students spend 13 weeks in London departing the U.S. in mid January
and returning in mid April. The program is based in Central London
near the British Museum in the world famous Bloomsbury Area.
Academics
London, and indeed the whole of England become a part
of the semester's curriculum. Students participate in five classes
for 15 hours credit.
British faculty teach courses in British History and Culture, Theatre,
and Art, and two MC professors teach classes in their own fields
of expertise which will vary from year to year.
Students attend the plays which they are studying in class and
see them acted by some of the world's greatest actors.
Students study
masterpiece paintings and great painters in class, then they go
to the galleries and museums and stand in front of the
original paintings.
Students learn about events in British history,
then visit the places there they actually took place.
Activities
A spring break trip including areas of Northern England, Scotland,
and Wales is an essential component of the semester's study.
The program provides an extensive schedule of excursions, activities
and events which will supplement the semester's classroom learning.
From a boating trip to Greenwich to walking beside the waters of the
English Channel at Dover to wandering through the halls at Windsor
Castle, the possibilities go on and on.
Faculty
British faculty members are hired by and are responsible to Mississippi
College.
In addition to the scheduled time in classes, the British faculty
will spend time with the students outside the classroom at theatre
performances, at art galleries and on tours.
Two MC faculty-in-residence will always be on hand to help make
London a "home away from home".
MC handles grades, academics and scheduling. This ensures that the
London semester will be consistent with campus-based programs.
Housing
Students spend most of the semester at St. Margarets Hotel, a bed and
breakfast facility with a full English breakfast provided daily.
Approximately one month is spent in Homestay. During this time the
students live in a British home and experience family life in London.
Why?
Samuel Johnson once said "When a man is tired of London, he is
tired of life", and scores of MC students who have participated
in the program since 1989 would agree with him. London is an intellectual
and cultural capital of the world. It is a fountainhead of western
civilization, and it retains the color, the character, and the charm
which have historically set it apart from all other cities. The student
who can call London a second home sees himself on a global, not a
regional, stage.
