STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM

Nursing Mission Trip

Flag of MexicoThe Mexico mission trip enables the students involved to understand how much personal responsibility can affect the workings of the trip and their own comfort. Since preparation for the trip takes place long before the actual departure, students are responsible for gathering much needed supplies on their own time. Assignments are made in the spring semester. Examples of these assignments are:

  • Contact grocery stores and ask for donations of rice, beans and canned drinks.
  • Contact local bottled water companies and ask for donations of water.
  • Contact churches and ask for donations of clothes, shoes, eyeglasses, etc.
  • Contact local physicians and drug stores asking for donations of medications and other medical supplies.
  • Contact local furniture companies and ask for donations of furniture, appliances, etc.

Academics

The program is integrated into the curriculum as a non-clinical and clinical elective. Students may choose which course best suits their needs.

The non-clinical elective aspect requires a limited amount of time in the mission field and are expected to complete written assignments.

The clinical elective requires much more commitment. The student spends large amount of his/her day in the Mission field taking care of the sick.

Missions

Faculty who supervise students on this trip are actively involved in the mission effort. Numerous speaking engagements in community churches and organizations are used to seek physical and monetary support for the program. Return visits to these churches and organizations are used as an expression of gratitude for the support. Approximately 125 letters are mailed to churches in the state of Mississippi asking for any assistance that can be given.

While the team takes care of the people who come for medical attention, they are given the priceless opportunity to share the good news of their Savior Jesus Christ. The team gets to take care of the physical and spiritual needs of their patients.
