STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM
Salzburg College
Salzburg College is a small private Austrian institution founded in
1971 in order to offer American students a European studies program
in a European setting.
Because of its location, history, and rich cultural heritage, the
city of Salzburg offers the ideal setting for a European studies program.
Salzburg College occupies a 16th century town-house on Ursulinenplatz,
a small square located in the heart of the old city. The five-story
building houses classrooms, offices, a library, a lounge and dining
room, music practice space, photo labs, and an art studio. From the
top floor library, there is a spectacular view of Salzburg which is
considered by many to be one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.
Academics
Participants must be at least a sophmore and have a minimum cumulative
GPA of 2.7.
Students enroll for a minimum of 15 semester hours and are required
to take one German language course and Austrian Civilization. Other
areas of study offered include Literature, History, Political Science,
Economics, Communication, International Business, Art History, Studio
Art, Music History, and Music Performance. A key theme of the academic
program is the integration of classroom work and field experience.
Excursions, guest lectures and interaction with local professionals
constitute an important aspect of most courses.
For an exciting adventure as well as a PED credit, courses in skiing
(spring) and hiking and rafting (fall) are also available. Other one-hour
options are Austrian Cooking and Folk and Historical Dance.
At the end of the spring semester, students who have completed courses
in International Business and maintained a B average in their academic
work may participate in a four-week internship with a firm in Austria.
Among the companies which have participated in the internship program
are General Motors in Vienna, BMW Munich, Procter & Gamble Vienna,
Leibherr Building Equipment, Johnson and Johnson, Welz International
Forwarders, Creditanstalt Bank, and the Salzburg Airport. The internships
are unpaid, so students participating should budget an additional
$400 - $500.
Housing
During the one-week field trip through Germany at the beginning
of the semester, housing arrangements are discussed and students
are
matched with carefully selected families from the Salzburg area.
When they arrive in Salzburg the students live with "their" Austrian
family.
Breakfast, dinner, and all weekend meals are taken with the family.
Lunch is provided Monday through Friday in the Salzburg College dining
room.
Travel
The program begins with a one-week trip through Germany which includes
stops in Trier, Cologne, Bonn, Worms, Speyer, Heidelberg, Rothenberg
and Nuremberg. Later in the semester, much of what has been studied
in the Austrian Civilization course can be experienced during the
five-day trip to Vienna. Shorter field trips are scheduled throughout
the semester.
A two-week break at mid-semester is set aside for independent travel
and field research. Students usually travel by train to European destinations
of their choice.
