Textbooks: Philosophy of Biology; Sober and Ecological Understanding: The Nature of Theory and the Theory of Nature; Pickett, Kolassa and Jones.

The main topic for discussion in this class will be "what is a theory". Students will be expected to learn how science develops and applies explanations (theories). The book Ecological Understanding reviews what theories are and The Philosophy of Biology looks at two major applications of theories in Biology.

EVALUATION:

There will be a two midterm tests each worth 20% of the final grade.

Presentation of a theory in Biology will be worth 20% of the final grade.

A take home final exam will be worth 40% of the final grade.
