Career Day Set for February 14 at Mississippi College

Recruiters from schools, the U.S. Navy, hospitals, banks and dozens of other employers will size up potential hires at Mississippi College’s 2017 Career Day.

The February 14 event on the Clinton campus coincides with Valentine’s Day. It should be a sweet opportunity for MC students and recent graduates to land jobs, organizers believe.

The program runs from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. that Tuesday at Anderson Hall in the B.C. Rogers Student Center.

MC Office of Career Services co-director Jim Miller anticipates as many as 85 employers from Mississippi and beyond will attend along with hundreds of students.

Career Day at the Baptist-affiliated university remains familiar turf for recruiters from Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi, the Clinton public school district, the University of Mississippi Medical Center, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg. This year, recruiters are coming from as far away as the Austin, Texas Police Department.

Mississippi College maintains a nice partnership with the Clinton public schools in its hometown. And Career Day always strengthens the relationship.

“We love having MC students do their student teaching with us,” says Tim Martin, assistant superintendent of the Clinton district.

“We’ve met a lot of good, qualified candidates,” Clinton schools public relations director Sandi Beason said at Mississippi College’s 2015 Career Day.

School district recruiters come from nearby districts like Canton, Pearl, Madison County and Jackson as well as more distant points like the DeSoto County schools south of Memphis.

A brighter USA economy should make job searches a little easier for future college graduates. Recent reports show consumer spending rose 3.8 percent. And the nation’s unemployment rate dipped to 4.6 percent in November 2016. With President-elect Donald Trump taking office on January 20, the nation’s economy is projected to see a mild cyclical rebound in 2017.

MC students typically come dressed for success, and bring resumes as they touch base with employers at Career Day. The MC Office of Career Services is the event sponsor. Employers have until February 1 to sign up.
