Communication Student Tori White Receives Radio People Scholarship
A scholarship opens doors for Mississippi College student Tori White to land an internship at radio stations in metro Jackson.
Announced at an MC Communication Department class on December 2, the award comes from the Ridgeland-based Radio People.
A 21-year-old communication major from Huntsville, Alabama, White hopes the scholarship will advance her career plans in a fast-paced industry. She begins work at Radio People stations in January.
“What I like most about communications is that there are so many career possibilities,” Tori says. “I look forward to one day working in radio, but career-wise, I’m still figuring that out.”
Mississippi College communication instructor Reid Vance believes White is an excellent choice for the $500 award.
“Tori is an exemplary student in the MC Communication Department. She has an outstanding work ethic, attitude and works hard without complaint,” Vance said.
Entering a pretty demanding career field, White “has a bright future ahead,” Vance added. “We are proud to have her represent our department and university.”
Joining her for Wednesday’s announcement were Radio People production staffers Victor Barnette and Nancy Fletcher-Smith. An MC communication graduate, Barnette enjoyed returning for the presentation in professor Mignon Kucia’s communication class. Department Chairman Cliff Fortenberry, colleagues and students applauded the newest scholarship recipient at Aven Hall.
Just a couple of years ago, Barnette received a similar Radio People scholarship leading to an internship at the group’s four stations. The 2014 MC alumnus is now serving as a full-time production director and radio personality. Barnette entered the business as a production assistant in 2012 at STAR 93.5, the Christian radio station at Mississippi College.
Radio People stations reach thousands of listeners with a variety of musical tastes in Central Mississippi. Their stations range from Y101.7 geared to teens and young adults to a nice blend of contemporary hits on Mix 98.7. Country music fans gravitate to a string of current hits on U.S. 96.3 and tune to 100.9 featuring country legends like Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Conway Twitty and Waylon Jennings.
Tori is anxious to take on a variety of tasks at the Mississippi radio stations in the new year. “I’ve always been interested in working in this field,” she said. “I’m very excited about the scholarship.”
