Dyslexia professionals from across the state will join parents, students and educators at a fall conference at Mississippi College.

About 150 people are expected to learn more about a host of topics focused on dyslexia issues. The conference will be held on the Clinton campus on October 7.

Speakers will include Robin Lemonis, office director of Literacy, Dyslexia and Early Childhood at the Mississippi Department of Education and Morgan Bryant, director of Student Counseling and Disability Services at Mississippi College.

Other speakers are: Kameron Ball, director of technology for the Clinton Public School District and Dr. Susan Buttross, a pediatrics professor at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

Clinton residents Cliff and Leigh Johnson, parents of a dyslexic child, and Teresa Mosley, lead psychometrist with MC’s Dyslexia Education and Evaluation Center, will also address conference guests.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. that Tuesday. The conference at Anderson Hall at the B.C. Rogers Student Center runs from 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The cost to attend is $50 for professionals, $35 for parents and $25 for MC faculty, staff and full-time students.

Dyslexia is a learning disorder characterized by difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds. Well-known Americans who faced struggles with dyslexia include former pro football player Tim Tebow, now with ABC’s “Good Morning America,” actress Whoopi Goldberg and film director Steven Spielberg.

MC’s Dyslexia Education and Evaluation Center assists dyslexic students in metro Jackson and other regions of the state.

In late September, Rachel Smith presented a check for $1,000 to the Dyslexia Education and Evaluation Center. The Meridian resident is a graduate of the MC Dyslexia Therapy Training Program. T-shirt sales help raise the funds.
