Friends of the Library Promote October Book Sale

Leland Speed Library staffers are gathering books, magazines, audio tapes and DVDs this summer to use for a giant sale at Alumni Gym in mid-October.

The sale is open to Mississippi College faculty, staff, students and the general public. MC library director Kathleen Hutchison says there was $6,533 generated from the MC book sale last fall. The upcoming event is set for Oct. 16-17 and will coincide with MC's Family Weekend.

MC supporters are encouraged to drop off the books and tapes at the library on College Street. A shoot will soon be attached to an alley door on the side of the building to make it convenient for library patrons to drop off items. At the moment, many of the books being donated are being kept in a library storage area.

"We are taking any book, DVD, audio tape or other donations should anyone be cleaning out their shelves at home," Hutchison said.

There were about 9,000 items at the MC library book sale last year. So far, more than 6,000 items have been collected in 2009. Prices of $1.00 for hardbacks and 50 cents for paperbacks are likely again this fall. Some of the books sold last year dated back more than a century. This year, there will be a large number of law books up for grabs. Copies of old Life magazines are expected to surface, too.

In the future, money generated from the sales will be used to purchase new library furniture.

The sale will run from about 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. both days. On Friday Oct. 16, MC faculty and staff will be invited to a sneak preview, she said. MC's Friends of the Library group, volunteers and library staffers are busy working behind the scenes to make the book sale a success again this fall.

Rock bottom book prices for a good cause should draw crowds. Central Mississippi book lovers are advised to get there early to get the best bargains.
