Gayle Wicker Addresses Who's Who Luncheon Dec. 1

Gayle Wicker
Gayle Wicker, the wife of U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi, will deliver the keynote speech at a luncheon Dec. 1 honoring top-notch students at Mississippi College.

A Tupelo resident and MC graduate, Wicker will speak to students being inducted into Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges in 2009. Joined by family members, 71 MC students will be saluted at the event at Anderson Hall.

The organization originated in 1934 when it was conceived by a University of Alabama undergraduate student, Pettus Randall, who was preparing to enter law school. He created an honor society that didn't have membership dues and fees.

Today, it is one of the most highly regarded and long-standing honors programs in the nation. More than 2,300 institutions of higher learning participate and nominate students to the national Who's Who program.

"Each year we honor our most outstanding students by naming them Who's Who of the student body," said Jim Turcotte, vice president of enrollment management and student affairs. "These students have excelled in the classroom and throughout the entire life of the college."

MC's "Who's Who" of 2009 represents "another outstanding group of students," Turcotte said. "This year's event will be a special time to honor their accomplishments."

Wicker is a former university trustee who's devoted much time and energy to her alma mater over the years. In 1972, the former Gayle Long was the first woman student body president in MC history. Gayle Long was heavily involved in her community including years of service as an administrator at the University of Mississippi's Tupelo campus.

The event begins at 11:30 a.m. in the large meeting room on the upper level of the B.C. Rogers Student Center.
