Georgia Welcomes Mississippi College Alums

Atlanta’s Chastain Park is the place to be for Mississippi College alums in the Peach State to sip McAlister’s sweet tea, feast on Penn’s fried catfish, and enjoy live musical entertainment.

Those are the main ingredients for the Mississippi Society of Georgia’s “Mississippi in the Park” event on June 14. The fun begins that Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and wraps up around 3:30 p.m.

Dozens of MC alums will visit with counterparts from such schools as Delta State University, the University of Southern Mississippi, and Mississippi State University as they relish good Southern hospitality.

Food goes fast, so it is best to order plates in advance, says Mississippi College regional alumni associate Lisa Williams. Lunch plates cost $15 by a June 6 deadline or $20 that day at Chastain Park at 145 West Wieuca Road, NW.

“We are hoping all alumni and friends come visit,” says Williams, who’s booked to attend the annual Atlanta festivities.

Visitors are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs to Chastain Park.

For Mississippi university alums who can’t get enough, there are two other major events scheduled for Friday June 13. Folks are invited to see the Atlanta Braves face the California Angels at 7:30 p.m. Alums will mingle for two hours before the MLB game at the stadium’s Hank Aaron Room named for the Atlanta Braves legend and Hall of Famer.

In addition, there’s a golf tournament for Mississippi university alums & friends at the Chapel Hills Golf Club on June 13.

For the fourth year, members of the Mississippi Society of Georgia will award a $1,000 college scholarship. It will go to a Georgia resident who enrolls as a freshman at a Mississippi college or university.
