Elizabeth Mahaffey will return to her alma mater to deliver the commencement speech at the Mississippi College School of Nursing.

A 1974 MC School of Nursing graduate, Mahaffey will address the Class of 2015 at ceremonies on May 8 at Swor Auditorium. Thirty-eight MC nursing students will receive diplomas that Friday on the Clinton campus.

Mahaffey serves as dean of nursing & allied health at Hinds Community College on its Jackson campus at 1750 Chadwick Drive. She served as a staff nurse from 1981 until 2000 at the Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

The Mississippi College School of Nursing named Mahaffey its outstanding alumna in 1999. Hinds Community College honored her as its outstanding faculty member in 1997. She’s a member of the American Technical Education Association and National Organization for Associate Degree Nursing.

“Libby Mahaffey is one of the nursing leaders in the state of Mississippi,” says Mary Jean Padgett, the MC School of Nursing dean. “She also is recognized nationally among nursing and nursing education professionals. She has served our profession extremely well.”

Mahaffey earned her master’s in psychiatric-mental health nursing at the University of Southern Mississippi in 1982 and doctorate in adult education at USM in 1992.

“I am proud to claim her as one of our graduates,” said Padgett, a 1973 MC School of Nursing graduate retiring as dean this spring.

Mahaffey was a member of the second class of MC School of Nursing graduates in 1974.
