James Sclater Chamber Music Concert Set for April 11

Dr. James S. Sclater

Music lovers are invited to a spring concert featuring violinist Marta Szlubowska of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra.

The program at Mississippi College’s Clinton campus April 11 will close out the 2013-14 season for the James S. Sclater Chamber Music Series.

Marta serves as the symphony’s concertmistress. She will perform one of Vivaldi’s gems, “Spring” from his Four Seasons. The program begins 7:30 p.m. that Friday evening at the Jean Pittman Williams Recital Hall.

The program will also include Harold Schiffman’s Chamber Concert No. 2 and the splendid “Liebeslieder Waltzes” penned by Brahms.

The series is named for Dr. Sclater, a longtime Clinton resident who’s an award-winning composer and extraordinary musician. The Alabama native retired from the MC Music Department faculty in 2010 after teaching 40 years at the Christian university.

Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door. Tickets cost $20 for general admission or $5 for students from any school.

Patrons can reserve tickets by calling 601-925-3440, contacting Dottie Serio at serio@mc.edu or going online at mc.edu/marketplace.

Four days later, the university’s Mixed Company, and the school’s Jazz Band combine their talents in a free concert April 15. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Jean Pittman Williams Recital Hall.
