Jim Miller Joins Mississippi College Career Services Office

Jim Miller remains passionate about helping students achieve their God-given potential.

A 29-year-old Tupelo native, Miller seems to be the perfect fit as the new assistant director of Career Services at Mississippi College.

At the busy office on the third floor of Nelson Hall, Miller joins other staffers assisting thousands of Mississippi College students each year.

They help students enhance their resumes, improve interview skills, get connected with employers, build confidence levels and much more. Planning the university’s Career Day in February is always a big item on their to-do list.

Miller is pretty familiar with the landscape on the Clinton campus and knows MC faculty and staff. He went to work at the Office of Career Services on May 18.

Before arriving, Jim worked since September 2013 as an assistant to the dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Mississippi College. In addition, he served as an administrative assistant with the university’s English Department. He brings considerable strengths to his new assignment, colleagues say.

“Jim is going to be a great addition to the Career Services team,” says Jennifer McGill, the MC Career Services director. “He has made plans for continuing success of cross-collaboration with other administrative and academic departments on this campus.”

With the USA economy brightening in recent months, Miller steps in at a much more upbeat time for college students seeking jobs during the Christian university’s 2015-16 academic year.

“I always wanted to work with students,” Miller says. The position at Career Services gives him the chance to strengthen relationships with students, the entire Mississippi College family and the region’s employers.

Miller earned his bachelor’s degree in political science and history Magna Cum Laude from the University of Mississippi in December 2009. He expects to complete his master’s in higher education administration at Mississippi College in the Fall of 2016.

A former insurance broker with Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi, Jim earlier worked as an historic interpreter for the Charleston, South Carolina Museum. He’s served as a substitute teacher with Lee County, Mississippi schools and promoted Ole Miss in the school’s admissions office. He once considered law school as a career option. But the 2005 Tupelo High School graduate believes he’s found his niche at MC’s Career Services Office.

Miller’s various job opportunities over the years will be an asset as he interacts students who often switch their career plans. “I can use my own experiences when talking with students.”

Jim, his wife, Allison, and their son, Henry, are Madison residents. The Millers are members of Broadmoor Baptist Church. In his spare time, Jim enjoys hunting in the back woods of the Magnolia State.

The son of Jimmy and Mary Criss Miller, the latest Career Services staffer brings MC family connections. In the mid-1970s, his mother received her bachelor’s degree at Mississippi College.
