Mary McRae Elected Student Government Association President at Mississippi College

Mary McRae is the new Student Government Association president at Mississippi College for 2015-16. An MC junior, Mary is a 21-year-old Tishomingo County resident.

Mississippi College seeks to help students build their faith, find family and prepare for the future.

Mary McRae, MC’s newly elected Student Government Association president, says she discovered the Baptist-affiliated university did all three things for her.

“My relationship with the Lord, as well as my passion for serving, has grown more than I could imagine over the past three years,” says McRae, a mathematics major and business finance minor. “I have found friends that supported me through the ups and downs and became my family.”

Serving as SGA’s vice president since May 2014, Mary worked well with SGA President Chip Wilson. She stayed in touch with university leaders, conducted weekly Student Senate meetings and tackled other duties as an Executive Council member.

The 21-year-old Tishomingo County, Mississippi resident defeated challenger Cole Gressett of Brandon in late March to win the election. Mary joins other officers taking office in early May.

What are her priorities on the Clinton campus?

“Over the next year as SGA president, I hope to continue to build the relationship I have with the administration in order to be the voice of the student body,” McRae says. “My number one goal is to enhance the student experience as a whole at MC.”

On track to graduate from the 5,000-student university in May 2016, McRae stays busy.

The Tishomingo County High School graduate works as a file clerk with the Morton Law Firm, PLLC in Clinton, remains active with the Laguna Social Tribe, and served as a student senator. A Choctaws cheerleader and Miss Mississippi College Pageant contestant in 2014, Mary worked as a staff member with Centri-Fuge summer camps in Ridgecrest, North Carolina. She presently serves as a children’s ministry servant leader at Pinelake Church in Clinton.

The Mississippi College junior eagerly awaits her new leadership role in 2015-16.

“MC has been a wonderful place over the past three years, and I cannot wait to spend my last year serving the university that has taught me so much.”

McRae hopes to go into the field of actuarial science and business as her career. Following graduation in 2016, she plans to teach math at a children’s home in Honduras.

Other results from the March 24 elections: Rowan St. John of Mesquite, Texas will be the SGA’s vice president, Emma Carroll Waller of Jackson will be the secretary and Zach Burns of Jay, Florida is the new treasurer.

Kaitlin McCarty of Brandon will chair the Campus Activities Board, Grant Gilliam of Clinton goes to work as Christian Development coordinator, while Andrew Borho of Gulfport serves as the new chief justice.
