MC Cafeteria Prices Go Up

The price of a good meal at Mississippi College is rising by $1 for faculty, staff and visitors to the Clinton campus. The increase at the Caf became effective Monday morning ( August 31).

"It is still a bargain," says Mike Prince, manager for Sodexo Food Services. For instance, faculty and staff will now pay $4 for lunch or dinner in the MC cafeteria. The new price for lunch will be $6 for visitors. Breakast for faculty and staff will now cost $3 for those paying cash at the Caf's register.

Prince noted it is the first such price increase for meals at MC in more than 13 years. "It was just time... looking at all of our costs," he said. The nation's minimum wage is up, gas prices are climbing and so is the cost of living, he said. Prince recalled he didn't raise the price when he first arrived on the Clinton campus in 1996.

Hungry customers around Clinton are paying more than $5 for a meal special at Subway or in the neighborhood of $6 to $7 for a sandwich at Lenny's Sub Shop. Visit Newks, McAllisters, or Chick Fil-A, and folks will soon discover those restaurant prices exceed what MC charges to faculty and staff.

Sodexo serves about 2,700 meals daily on the Clinton campus. So far, Prince says he's hearing few complaints about the new price hike.

Typically, about 100 MC faculty and staff members visit the Caf for lunch. The $4 lunch deal will continue to include a drink, dessert, a salad bar, and a main course.

"The feedback is that it is still the best deal in town," Prince says.

Sodexo is making other changes, with work continuing on a new coffee shop in the Leland Speed Library. Serving coffee, muffins and drinks to go, the tiny shop at the library will be like a smaller version of Jazzman's. It is due to open in mid-September.
