MC Career Services Office Awards Kaplan Testing Certificate

A Mississippi College senior is the recipient of a certificate for a free Graduate Record Exam preparation course at the Kaplan Testing Center.

The honor goes to Melissa Wilkes, 21, of Memphis, who hopes to open a private practice after getting her master's in social work.

The MC Office of Career Services recently awarded the certificate to Wilkes. The Kaplan classroom or online course is valued at $1,199. A subsidiary of The Washington Post Company, Kaplan is a test preparation and admissions facility that trains and prepares students for college, graduate and professional school.

Professor Brian Anderson, the director of MC's Social Work Program, nominated Wilkes for the award.

"Melissa is an outstanding student who has truly shown academic promise as a social work major," Anderson said. "In many cases, she has served as a mentor for her fellow classmates and is well-endowed with regard to her potential in becoming an effective helping professional."

The Mississippi College Office of Career Services in Nelson Hall provides career planning and training to students and alumni through self-assessments, resume reviews, interview coaching and career fairs.

Karen Lindsey-Lloyd, MC's director of retention and career services, praises the new award recipient.

"We are delighted to be able to award this opportunity to such a deserving student as Melissa," Lindsey-Lloyd said. With her academic achievements, campus leadership and community involvement, Wilkes is well on her way to a promising career, she said.

Wilkes plans to get her MC bachelor's degree in social work in May and go to graduate school. At MC, she's vice president of the Association of Student Social Workers. Wilkes is devoted to community service on many fronts. She's been a volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House, Relay for Life and Toys for Tots, to name a few of her off-campus activities to help others.
