MC Night Marks Second Season with M-Braves

Mississippi College Night will bring hundreds of MC fans to Trustmark Park to see the champion Mississippi Braves in action April 20.

The 2008 Southern League champs led by manager Phillip Wellman will be the big attraction on that Monday evening starting at 7:05 p.m. The M-Braves take the field that night against Chattanooga.

The second annual MC Night follows last season's initial event that attracted MC students, alumni, faculty, staff and other Choctaws to the beautiful ballpark in Pearl. Just like last April's game, Monday features $1 hot dog night. MC freshman Jessica Terrill of Fulton, the 2009 Miss Mississippi College Scholarship Pageant winner, will throw the first pitch on April 20.

During the first MC Night, Choctaws athletic director Mike Jones tossed the ceremonial first pitch, the MC singing ensemble "Mixed Company" did the national anthem, and MC teams - from baseball to soccer - roamed the stands. President Lee Royce, among others, welcomed members of the university community.

"It was a perfect spring evening for fans of the MC Choctaws and the M-Braves," said Andy Kanengiser, the university news coordinator and one of the event's organizers. "It was truly a homerun because the Mississippi Braves defeated the Huntsville Stars!''

MC hopes to get more student organizations from the Clinton campus involved this year.

MC alumni affairs director Ross Aven says he's hoping MC Night becomes a signature event to get alums together in metro Jackson to enjoy a terrific combination: food, fellowship and fun. Ticket prices will be sliced in half for MC faculty, staff, students, and alums showing an MC identification card.

The Mississippi Braves open their 2009 home season Monday April 9 against the Carolina Mudcats. The team wraps it up Saturday August 29 at home against West Tennessee when it will be Mayberry Night.

More than 7,000 fans crowded Trustmark Park to see the debut of the M-Braves, the Atlanta Braves Double-A team in April 2005. Big crowds should be back again in 2009 to see the minor league ballclub led by manager Phillip Wellman and General Manager Steve DeSalvo.
