MC Salutes Outgoing Human Resources Director Marilyn Sauls

Scores of people jammed the Mississippi College Human Resources Office. On a Thursday afternoon in late July, the folks visiting Nelson Hall didn't come with questions about employee benefits.

Faculty, staff and students milled around the second-floor office to congratulate outgoing human resources director Marilyn Sauls on 20 years of outstanding service at the Christian university. It was an opportunity to say thanks and bid her farewell before the Clinton resident relocates with her family in Georgia.

Cupcakes and punch added to the festivities. Dozens of admirers penned their thoughts on the pages of a book to wish Marilyn well before she heads to the Peach State to be closer to her family in the Atlanta area.

Staffers from MC's International Programs office, professors from the School of Business, vice presidents, employees from Alumni Affairs and many more were part of her going away reception. Lots of hugs were exchanged.

"I will miss her a bunch - we've been friends a long time - it is like losing a sister," said Sherry Bobo, the MC campus coordinator for scheduling. Bobo plans to visit Sauls at her home in Flowery Branch, Ga. in the fall.

For Sauls, the move will put her in the vicinity of her two grown children in Georgia.

Bobo served as manager of the MC bookstore when she first got to know Sauls. Their friendship blossomed ever since. "It will be very hard to replace her."

In a nutshell, Sauls is very "down to earth. She's just good through and through and willing to help in any way she can," Bobo said.

"She was one of the first to greet me and welcome me to the MC family in 2005," said Wayne VanHorn, dean of the School of Christian Studies and the Arts. "She was always courteous and helpful when I had questions relating to benefits and personnel matters."

Sauls "had a unique combinations of technical skills related to human resources and people skills," VanHorn added. "She knew how to relate to people."

MC business professor Lloyd Roberts, former interim president of the university, vice president for academic affairs Ron Howard and international programs administrator Diana Brackenridge were among those stopping by to greet Marilyn Sauls.

"We certainly have enjoyed working with her and appreciate all the time and care she gave to the international students," Brackenridge said. "It was through her hard work they were able to be employed as international students at MC," she said. "We greatly appreciate her patience and willingness to go the extra mile to get them properly processed and employed."

One by one, Sauls thanked all the visitors to her July 23 reception on the Clinton campus.
