MC Signs Issue Swine Flu Health Tips

Mississippi College is posting blue and white notices on campus buildings that give faculty, staff and students a number of health tips regarding the swine flu virus.

"We Care About You" is the headline on the signs posted Aug 20 at the MC cafeteria, Nelson Hall restrooms and other locations on the Clinton campus.

The signs carry health tips from the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. The CDC urges people to frequently wash their hands with soap, avoid sick people, and says people should stay home from school or work if they become ill. It is also advises people to avoid touching one's eyes and nose and suggests using tissue paper to handle sneezes.

Some school and college campuses around the state are reporting cases of the H1N1 flu virus. But health officials are not recommending school closures, The Clarion-Ledger reported in a front-page story August 20.

As of Aug 19, the Vicksburg-Warren School District Web site reported 25 cases of the virus in 11 of its 15 schools, the newspaper said. Mississippi State in Starkville, Southern Miss in Hattiesburg and Ole Miss in Oxford were among the universities impacted by cases of the swine flu, The Clarion-Ledger said.

MSU reported 84 probable cases as of Aug. 19. Statewide, there have been 413 cases of the swine flu reported by the state Department of Health since May 15.

MC leaders say they are monitoring the situation very closely. A vaccine for the H1N1 virus should be available by mid-October.
