MC to Host Business Healthcare Symposium Oct. 27

Keynote speaker Gov. Haley Barbour

Gov. Haley Barbour will be the keynote speaker at an Oct. 27 symposium in downtown Jackson that focuses on the business of healthcare.

The Mississippi College School of Business is presenting the one-day conference that brings together the state's political and medical leaders to tackle one of the most critical issues facing America.

Other speakers at the forum at the Jackson Convention Complex include Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant, Mississippi State Medical Association President Dr. Randy Easterling and Dr. Thomas C. Fenter, corporate medical adviser for Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi. Fenter will speak at 10:15 a.m.

The program opens with coffee and registration at 9 a.m. and concludes around 1 p.m.

"Obviously, America is in the midst of a very emotional debate as we examine the future of our health care system for generations to come," said Marcelo Eduardo, dean of the MC School of Business.

"As a result, this October 27th symposium on the business of health care is timely. We have a number of prominent business and political leaders to discuss these issues, including Gov. Barbour," Eduardo said. "The MC School of Business is delighted to present this event."

Invitations have gone out to more than 500 Mississippi professionals.

Participants will address the current health care debate in Washington and how the national dialogue is affecting Mississippi businesses. Conference guests will also hear from Mississippi business leaders who have carried forth innovative programs to manage the increasing costs of health care.

The symposium is scheduled as the nation battles a recession with the USA jobless rate approaching 10 percent. The conference will be held at the convention center's Trustmark Meeting Rooms 1 & 2.

Other speakers on the program include Mississippi political activists and authors Andy Taggart and Jere Nash. Taggart is a Madison attorney, an MC graduate and member of MC's Board of Trustees. They will speak at 10:50 a.m. Other speakers at the conference include executives with the Southern Farm Bureau Life Insurance Co. and BankPlus. Lunch will be served at the meeting.
