MC Unveils Center for Economic Education

Mississippi College's School of Business this week launches a new economic education center to benefit Jackson area teachers, students and adult learners.

The Center for Economic Education & Development aims to promote a greater understanding of economics and the nation's economic system. Its debut will be a master teacher in economics workshop to assist the Clinton Public Schools July 28-29.

MC's center will partner with the Mississippi Council on Economic Education housed at Millsaps College in Jackson. Part of the 60-year-old National Council on Economic Education, the council in Mississippi has trained more than 4,300 teachers and impacted 430,000 students in recent years. Pam Smith leads the council on the Jackson campus.

The MC School of Business Center for Economic Education and Development seeks to become an academic resource for public and private schools in metro Jackson, and help area teachers with professional development programs. The center on the Clinton campus will consult with public and private schools about how to put into place and manage Mississippi's required economics curriculum.

The new MC center will also conduct programs to promote and encourage sound financial habits, including savings and investments in households across metro Jackson, said MC business dean Marcelo Eduardo.

"We are excited to do something that fits with our mission to educate Mississippians," Eduardo said Monday.

The partnership between MC and Clinton schools and other organizations builds upon some good relationships cultivated over the years.

"We are working with the Clinton school district - they are integral to MC. We are appreciative of (Clinton Superintendent's) Phil Burchfield's leadership. The whole metro area of Jackson is what we are targeting," Eduardo said.

More professional development is needed as teachers move ahead with the state's required economics curriculum.

Arriving in the midst of a recession for the nation, the center at Baptist-affiliated MC also will provide educational outreach for the general public to promote a better understanding of the U.S. economic system, Eduardo said.

The new center will be housed in Self Hall in the School of Business along College Street. About 16 Clinton teachers will be in the initial workshop. Mississippi College's MBA program is the oldest and largest in metro Jackson. With nearly 1,000 students, the MC School of Business is the largest at the Christian university based in Clinton.
