MC Welcomes Faculty and Staff to 184th Academic Year

George Conyne, a professor at the University of Kent in England, is one of the newcomers in the Mississippi College family as MC begins its 184th academic year.

He's a visiting professor who will teach American Civil Rights and a course on the rise of U.S. corporations this fall and spring.

Conyne will be among the new faculty and staff members getting the opportunity to greet others in the MC community at a special fall convocation Friday August 21. At Swor Auditorium at 10 a.m., the event for faculty, staff and friends will be followed by lunch at Anderson Hall compliments of Sodexo. Breaking bread at the B.C. Rogers Student Center also offers a marvelous opportunity for fellowship!

For members of the MC family, the meal will be a time to find out a little more about Conyne and his school in Canterbury. With 17,000 students from more than 140 nations, Kent is known as the UK's European university with other campuses in Brussels and Medway. Fast-growing Kent University opened its doors in 1965. Many of its students work as volunteers in their local community.

Conyne will teach in the Department of History on the Clinton campus and at the MC School of Law in downtown Jackson. He's on sabbatical this year.

New faculty and staff will get the chance to learn more about the Christian university at orientation sessions Aug. 18. Students will pour into MC on move-in day Saturday Aug 22 followed by an early afternoon convocation at First Baptist Church in Clinton.

Last week, saw one major sign of the new year approaching as more than 100 MC football players reported for check-in at Nelson Hall. "It's an outsanding group of players," said Choctaws head coach Norman Joseph on Wednesday. "It was a great recruiting year."

The Choctaws finished 5-5 last season, and hope to improve upon that record this fall. They are predicted to finish in third place in the American Southwest Conference.

Nearby the sign-in tables, MC junior Kelsey Kifer of St. Joseph, La. was busy selling MC Choctaw football shirts at $10 each. "We sold a bunch - over 100," she reported.

Among the customers were parents Gaylon and Curtis Cowan of Baton Rouge. They bought two shirts. Their son, Kendrick Johnson, 18, an MC freshman is playing for the Choctaws this fall. The season opens Sept. 5 with the Backyard Brawl against Millsaps on the MC campus.
